Paradigm shift’ needed for water users in Subdistrict No.1

MONTE VISTA— On Aug. 18 a public outreach meeting was held in Monte Vista to inform the constituents of Subdistrict No.1 of the proposed changes in the Subdistrict No.1 Plan of Water Management No.4.

Over the last year and a half and multiple ongoing public meetings, the Board of Managers has been diligently preparing a proactive plan to make gains to recover the unconfined aquifer and avoid curtailment of over 3,000 wells before 2031.
In order to achieve sustainability and comply with the State’s Groundwater Rules, the Subdistrict is considering a “paradigm shift” to change how the subdistrict has been operating from a voluntary focused subdistrict to a subdistrict that comes to a balanced system, where the volume of water being diverted into the unconfined aquifer and the aquifer level determines how much groundwater can be withdrawn. Or, as program manager Marisa Fricke stated, a subdistrict that “lives within our means.”

The Board of Managers for subdistrict No.1 continues to solicit feedback and asks for input to craft a plan to help take a proactive approach to reach goals outlined in Subdistrict No.1 decree.
All meetings are open to the public; a calendar of meetings can be found by going to www.rgwcd.org or calling 719-589-6301.
