Pilgrimage set at historic sites

VALLEY — The San Juan Bautista Catholic Church and Spiritual Center in La Garita, a mission of the San Juan Catholic Community, and the Sangre de Cristo Catholic Church in San Luis will host a two-day pilgrimage, “Camino del Espiritu,” for those wanting to grow in their Catholic faith while learning about the strength of faith and traditions the first Hispano Catholics brought to the San Luis Valley. The pilgrimage will take place on September 9-10 and is limited to 30 participants.

The San Juan Catholic Spiritual Center is the home of the San Juan Bautista Catholic Mission Church established in 1877. The site also includes the Convento Monument and the St. John Paul II Rosary Walk with its 20-foot cross and 23 original buon fresco paintings depicting the life of Jesus Christ. For Catholics, the Rosary is a form of vocal and contemplative prayer with meditations on the life of Christ and his mother Mary.

The Stations of the Cross Shrine, under the auspices of the Sangre de Cristo Catholic Church, is located in San Luis, the oldest town in Colorado. The Stations of the Cross are a series of life size bronze statues depicting the last hours of Christ’s life as man. Also known as the Way of the Cross, it is a devotion consisting of prayer and reflection on the great love Jesus Christ showed by his pain and suffering on his way to Crucifixion.
