MONTE VISTA — Thursday night Monte Vista played their second home match of the season against Bayfield. Monte Vista couldn’t keep pace and dropped the meeting 3 sets to none for their third loss of the season.

Last year it was tough sailing for the Pirates who struggled through a 3-18 season. With a roster shake-up of 6 seniors from the previous team and a new head coach in Elaine Wenta, Monte Vista is hoping to see change in the 2018 season. Progress doesn’t just happen over night and the Pirates will continue to walk the path towards improvement.

Against Bayfield on Thursday the Pirates got off on the wrong foot in the first set allowing a 10-point run to the Wolverines. A 6-point run of their own snugged things up but they would still relent the set to Bayfield 25-18.

In the second set things got a little tougher with two uninterrupted service streaks for Bayfield. Monte Vista struggled to take advantage of their time at the service line dropping the second set by a score of 25-14.

A wake-up call rang on the Pirate bench for the third set, Monte Vista battled for the third set, keeping things tight up to a 7-6 score in Monte Vista’s favor. Then the Pirates fell silent allowing a 9-point run. That run put the set in Bayfield’s pocket as the Wolverines would lead for the remainder all the way to the 25-18 conclusion.

For the Pirates the team lead in kills went to senior Harley Kincannon with three. Fellow senior Alyssa Rawinksi would take the lead in blocks with three as well.

Moving forward Monte Vista will continue their tour through the Intermountain League. The Pirates will go to Pagosa Springs on Sept. 6, Centauri on Sept. 15 and host Alamosa on Sept. 18.
