Alamosa knocks off defending state champs in La Junta

ALAMOSA— There were plenty of points of interest in the second week of valley football. Alamosa’s road upset, Sargent’s bounce-back game, and Sanford’s blowout over Swink at home.

Alamosa 22, La Junta 6

The Moose traveled to La Junta to face the Tigers carrying the burden of La Junta taking the four previous games in the series. The last game a 34-0 shut out where the Tigers blanked Alamosa.

Friday night Alamosa (2-0) was in the driver’s seat early closing the first half 7-0. The Moose defense continued to control the game keeping the Tigers (1-1) quiet going up 14-0. La Junta got on the board late in the third thanks to an interception to make it 14-6. Alamosa would put the final nail in the coffin courtesy of a Cash Mueller run to make it 22-6.

Alamosa shut out the La Junta offense and pulled off the win. While it was an upset according to the coach’s poll – La Junta ranked first and Alamosa unranked – Alamosa was favored by the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) by four spots. Alamosa will host Mitchell for Homecoming next week – Friday, Sept. 20th at 7 p.m.

Olathe 27, Center 0

What seemed like a possibly evenly matched game with Olathe (1-2) and Center (1-1) also started that way. In the first half, both teams went back and forth trading mistakes. The first half saw the two squads combine for 7 turnovers. It was Olathe that finally staked claim on the game, registering the first two scores going up 14-0. From there, the Pirates never lost the lead to shut Center out on the road. Center will be on the road next week facing Trinidad Saturday, Sept. 21.

Sargent 48 Springfield 8

Last week Sargent (1-1) faced a good Fowler team and wound up on the wrong side of the scoreboard. Sargent has had a pretty solid hold on the league these past few years So with rival Sanford in the wings, the Farmers needed a good game to bounce back. Their opportunity came against Springfield (0-3). Sargent was fast to capitalize on the visiting Longhorns. With Kage Pepper at the helm, Sargent dominated the contest with a 40-point margin of victory. Next up for the Sargent Farmers will be the Mancos Blue Jays Friday, Sept. 20 at 6 p.m.

Sanford 52, Swink 6

A season ago Sanford had a positive turnaround cleaning up three straight seasons of losing records. Among last year’s wins, was a big-time shut out over Swink. This year Sanford (2-0) performed similarly, going up by a whopping 40-0 at the half and were solidly in control. Swink’s Lions (1-2) would register a score in the second half but it was far too little too late with Sanford taking the game by six possessions. Sanford can tack on a third straight win when they travel north to visit Sangre de Cristo Saturday the 21st at 1 p.m.

Pagosa Springs 28, Centauri 20

Centauri- 1A and Pagosa Springs- 2A share a long history having once played in the same league. Friday’s game was an opportunity for both squads to see where they fit. The Falcons (1-1) got a feel for and competed against the upper-class opponent. A power outage caused minor delays in Friday’s game but didn’t slow competition. The two squads were separated by one point in the fourth quarter with Pagosa Springs (1-2) leading 21-20. Pagosa would add one more to finalize the score. Centauri will go from one Pirate team to the next. The Falcons will go on the road to face Olathe on Friday, Sept. 20th at 7 p.m.
