Regional basketball tournaments are this weekend

ALAMOSA – The Colorado High School Activities Association released its regional basketball tournament schedules on Monday. All of the brackets are posted on the CHSAANow.com web site.

A total of 16 San Luis Valley teams will be in regional tournaments. Five of them will host tournaments this weekend.

Class 3A

Centauri

Both of Centauri’s basketball teams will host a first and second round game in the Class 3A State Tournament.

The Falcon boys team (16-5) is the fifth seed and will host 28th-seeded Timnath (11-11) on Friday at 4:30 p.m. The second game will feature 12th-seeded Manual (15-7) against 21st-seeded Platte Valley (10-12) at 7:30 p.m.

The winners of these two games will play Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

The Lady Falcons (15-6) are seeded fourth and will host 29th-seeded Thomas MacLaren (11-10) at 3 p.m. on Friday. The second game will be between 13th-seeded Cedaredge (13-9) and 20th-seeded Banning Lewis Academy (16-6) at 6 p.m.

The victors will face off on Saturday at noon.

The final eight teams will play at the University of Denver’s Hamilton Gym on March 7-9.

Class 2A

Sanford

Both Sanford basketball teams will host a regional tournament this weekend.

The Mustang boys team (18-4) is the sixth seed and will host the Region 6 Tournament. It will play Golden View Classical Academy (10-11) at 2:30 p.m., while 11th-seeded Holly (16-6) will play 22nd-seeded Loveland Classical (15-6) at 6:30 p.m.

The winners of the games will play Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

The Lady Mustangs (17-5) are seeded fourth and will host the Region 4 Tournament. Their first opponent will be 29th-seeded Crowley County (12-9) at 1 p.m. on Friday. The second game is between 13th-seeded Wiggins (12-9) and 20th-seeded Las Animas (16-6) at 4 p.m.

The victors will play Saturday at 1 p.m.

Monte Vista

Both Monte Vista teams will be in action but both will be on the road.

The Pirates (14-7) are the 18th seed and will play in the Region 2 Tournament at Merino. They will face 18th-seeded Walsenburg (14-7) at 3:30 p.m. The second game will have second-seeded Merino (19-3) against 31st-seeded Evangel Christian Academy (8-13) at 6:30 p.m.

The winners will play Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

The Lady Pirates (17-3) are seeded 12th and will play in the Region 5 Tournament at Hoehne. Monte will play 21st-seeded Wray (8-12) at 7 p.m. on Friday, and fifth-seeded Hoehne (20-2) will take on 28th-seeded Byers (7-13) at 5:30 p.m.

The winners play at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Sargent

Both Sargent teams are also in regional action on the road.

The Farmers (15-6) are seeded 20th and they will compete in the Region 4 Tournament in Collbran. Sargent will play 13th-seeded Fowler (15-7) at 7:30 p.m., while the host team, fourth-seeded Plateau Valley (20-1), will play 29th-seeded Wiggins (12-9) at 5:30 p.m.

The winners play at noon on Saturday.

The Lady Farmers (14-6) are the 17th seed and they will play at top-seeded Merino in the Region 1 Tournament Friday. They will face 16th-seeded Fowler (13-9) at 2 p.m. on Friday. The second game will be between Merino (22-2) and 32nd-seeded Trinidad (11-11) at 5 p.m.

The winners of the two games will face off Saturday at 1 p.m.

Center

The Center girls (11-9) are the 24th seed and they will play in the Region 8 Tournament at Mancos. The Lady Vikings will face ninth-seeded Sedgwick County (18-4) Friday at 2 p.m.

If they win, the Lady Vikings will play either Mancos or Del Norte at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Del Norte

The Del Norte (10-11) girls are seeded 25th and they will play at eighth-seeded Mancos (16-5) at 2 p.m. on Friday.

The winners will play Saturday at 11 a.m.

The Class 2A State Tournament is at Blue Arena (formerly the Budweiser Events Center) in Loveland on March 7-9.

Class 1A

Sierra Grande

Both Sierra Grande teams will play in a regional tournament this weekend.

The Panthers (16-5) are the sixth seed and will host the Region 6 Tournament. They will first play 27thth-seeded Wiley (8-11) at 4 p.m. The second game is between 11th-seeded De Beque (16-4) and 22nd-seeded Cheraw (9-11) at 6 p.m.

The winners will play Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Lady Panthers (10-12) are seeded 30th and they will play at third-seeded Flatirons Academy (20-1) in the Region 3 Tournament in Westminster. The second game is between 14th-seeded Rocky Mountain Lutheran (15-6) and 19th-seeded De Beque (13-8) at 7 p.m.

The winners of these two games will play Saturday at 1 p.m.

Sangre de Cristo

Both Sangre de Cristo teams will be on the road for their region tournaments.

The Thunderbirds (14-7) are the 20th seed and will play in the Region 4 Tournament. Their first opponent will be 13th-seeded Otis (14-7) and they will play at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.

Should they win, the T-birds will play either Moffat or Stratton Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

The Lady Thunderbirds (17-4) are seeded 17th and they will travel to top-seeded McClave for the Region 1 Tournament. Their first game is against 16th-seeded Hi-Plains (11-10) Friday at 12:30 p.m. The other game is at 11 a.m. between McClave (20-1) and 32nd-seeded La Veta (8-14).

The winners play at 1 p.m. Saturday

McClave features former Alamosa student-athlete Emily Melgoza.

Moffat

The Moffat boys (13-7) team is the 29th seed and the Cowboys will also play in the Region 4 Tournament against fourth-seeded Stratton (17-5) at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. If they win, they will play either Otis or Sangre de Cristo at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Centennial

The Centennial boys team (10-8) enters as the 26th seed and they will play at seventh-seeded Peetz (17-4) in the Region 7 Tournament. The other game will be between 10th-seeded Eads (16-6) and 23rd-seeded Genoa-Hugo/Karval (11-11) at 7 p.m.

The winners will face off Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Class 2A State Tournament is March 7-9 at the University of Northern Colorado’s Bank of Colorado Arena in Greeley.
