Rio Grande County seeks volunteer victim advocates

RIO GRANDE COUNTY — Rio Grande County Victim Advocate Unit is actively searching for individuals who are interested in volunteering for the Victim Advocate Unit. Individuals need to be kind, caring and compassionate and willing to help people during their worst times.

Advocates in Rio Grande County cover the towns of Monte Vista, Del Norte and South Fork, which also includes the county itself. Advocates will assist and offer support for victims and witnesses for crimes as well as deaths.

Being an advocate is a gratifying position. Advocates work closely with the law enforcement agencies in the area as well as the court system.

Volunteers can assist others in their time of need, creating a bond that means more than most people realize. The unit will train volunteers in everything they need to do including paperwork and how to interact with the courts and law enforcement.

Volunteers must be willing to be on call and willing to be called out at night and on weekends.

Anyone who is interested in volunteering may contact the Rio Grande County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with Courtney Arthur at 719-657-4000 or send an email to [email protected] to request an application.
