Rotary donation buys rental skates

ALAMOSA– A grant from Rotary District #5470 has enabled the Alamosa Rotary Club to donate $1,500 for the purchase of roller skates at the Alamosa Family Recreation Center. That donation will be celebrated this Friday with a “Rolling With Rotary” event at the city’s multi-purpose pavilion next to the rec center from 4-8 p.m., and will serve as the grand opening of the roller rink.

A brief ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. Friday to thank Rotary and the Five Star Riders and Hoodlums car clubs for donating funds to purchase skates. The SLV Roller Derby club will also be thanked for being stewards of the sport.

Local Rotarians are raising $750 which was matched by the district to purchase 46 pair of roller skates in various youth and adult sizes according to Jes Jolly, recreation division manager for Alamosa Parks and Recreation. The skates may be rented for use in the city’s ice rink building.

With the help of an earlier grant and community fundraising, the city was able to purchase ice skates for rentals, but funds were not adequate to also purchase roller skates for use on the concrete floor during warmer months.

“We encourage the public to bring their own roller skates as well,” Jolly said, noting that the community encouraged the use of the facility for roller skating as well as ice skating. She added that the rink recently added an “awesome new sound system and some new disco lights.”

Public roller skating is scheduled for Fridays from 4-8 p.m., Saturdays 2-8 p.m. and Sundays 4-8 p.m. throughout the summer and early fall. The full schedule and more information may be found on the web site, alamosarec.org, or by calling 589-2105. Skating passes are $2 and $3, and $4 and $3 with skate rental.

The Rotary Club will be sponsoring a “cornhole” tournament in conjunction with the event at 5:30 p.m.
