Ruby M. Atencio


SAN ANTONIO — Lifetime San Antonio, Colorado resident Ruby M. Atencio, 87, died March 17, 2021, at the San Luis Valley Health Conejos County Hospital in La Jara.

Ruby was born in San Antonio, Colorado, the loving daughter of Manuel Garcia and Cleotilde Sisneros Garcia on February 5, 1934.  She married the love of her life, Jose “Joe” Francisco Atencio, at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Conejos on January 18, 1953.  They enjoyed more than 62 years together until his death in 2015.

Ruby as a member of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in was active in several church groups over the years.  She was also in the Knights of Columbus with her husband Joe.  She worked for more than 25 years as a Cook for the South Conejos School District and loved cooking for the kids and her family.  In her younger years, she enjoyed making pastries.

In her spare time, she would sew, listen to music and she took great pride in growing and caring for her flowers.

She also loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her children Eloy Atencio of San Antonio, CO, Elaine (Felipe) Blea of Antonito, Erold (Joyce) Atencio of Alamosa, Elizabeth (Dale) Cisneros of Alamosa, and Andrew (Ernestine) Atencio of Alamosa; her grandchildren: Brigitte, Caylum, Derrick, Lillian, Roman, Cory, Brandy, Megan and Cheyenne; her great-grandchildren Jayvian, Kaylee, Chris, Jonathan, Quiara, Kelaya, Iziah, and Ylexianna; her beloved dogs Gizmo and Dakota; her siblings: Michael Garcia of Alamosa, Cordy Garcia of Washington, Richard Garcia of Antonito and Frances Atencio of Denver; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.

Ruby is preceded in death by her parents, her eldest infant son Erold, her husband Joe, her brothers Rudy, Manuel and Salomon Garcia, and her sisters Ernestine Jaramillo, Loretta Acevado, Freida Morimoto and Florence Sandoval.

A Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 10:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 22, 2021, at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Conejos.

Cremation will follow services.
