ALAMOSA – The Sanford High School boys basketball team got a tough test from Del Norte, but in the long run, the Indians managed to defeat the Tigers 46-37 in the Class 2A District 6 Tournament semifinals Thursday at Plachy Hall.
Cash Caldon put Sanford on the board first, but Ben Parra made two free throws to tie the score at 2-2. Tyler Christensen scored four points as the Indians led 8-2 after the first quarter.
Thomas Sanchez pulled the Tigers within 8-4 early in the fourth, but Justin McCarroll made a 3-point basket. Dante LeBlanc made a layup and added a free throw, but the Indians scored five straight points for a 16-7 advantage.
Brennan Velasquez drained a trey for Del Norte to pull the Tigers within 16-10. But Sanford outscored Del Norte 5-4 the rest of the period and led 21-14 at halftime.
Caldon opened the third period with a 3-pointer. That sparked the Indians to outscore the Tigers 15-11 in the period to extend the lead to 36-25.
The Tigers were only able to close within the final score in the fourth quarter.
McCray Larsen led Sanford with 19 points, followed by Caldon with 13. Parra was Del Norte’s leading scorer with 17 points.
Lake County 67, Crested Butte 65, OT
The Lake County High School boys basketball team scored in the final seconds of the overtime period to defeat Crested Butte 67-65.
The titans led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter. The Panthers came back to tie the score at 30-30 at halftime.
Crested Butte took a 44-41 lead after the third quarter, but Lake County outscored the Titans 16-13 in the fourth quarter to tie the score at 57-57 and send the game into overtime.
In the extra period, Lake County outscored Crested Butte 10-8.
Erik Wasinger scored 40 points to lead Crested Butte, which included seven 3-point baskets. Grayson White scored 12 and Alan Prieto scored 10.
Jonathan Valdez was Lake County’s top scorer with 21 points, followed by Brandon Gaines with 20.
Saturday schedule set
The third-place game will pit Del Norte (12-9) against Crested Butte (12-8) at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Sanford (17-4) will face Lake County (12-9) in the championship at 7:30 p.m.
