MOSCA – The fifth-ranked Sanford High School girls basketball team looked to be headed to a win over Sangre de Cristo Friday at the Thunderbirds’ gym. The Lady Indians had a 39-32 lead with 2:27 left in the game, however, the Lady Thunderbirds were not about to give up.
In fact, Sangre went on an 8-1 run in the final minute to tie the game and send it into overtime.
But Sanford got some timely free throw shooting and it held on for a 49-46 win.
Cheyenne Caldon gave Sanford the first lead of the game, but Idahlia Garcia tied the score. Both teams split at the line twice to tie the score at 4-4 before Cheyenne Caldon and Makenzie Reynolds both drained 3-point baskets to give the Lady Indians a 10-4 advantage.
Ashley Mortensen made one of two free throws for the Lady T-Birds, but Cheyenne Caldon made another three to give Sanford a 13-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Garcia started the second quarter with a layup and Kamryn Rogers followed by splitting at the line to bring Sangre within 13-8. After Alyssa Edgar also made one of two free tosses, Mortensen made two free throws to close the margin to 14-10.
Asia Caldon drove for a layup and added a free throw, but Mortensen scored on the other end. Avryn Smith scored for Sanford to give the Lady Indians a 19-12 advantage.
Tymberlynn Rogers made one of two from the line and Haylee Freel made a layup to again cut the Sanford lead to four at 19-15. Reynolds also split at the line, and after Freel scored, Asia Caldon and Reynolds both scored to extend the Lady Indians’ lead to 24-=17.

Mortensen opened the third quarter with a jumper, but Haley Faucette made one of two charity tosses. Peyton Metz knocked down a jumper for Sangre, however, Cheyenne Caldon drove for a layup, Asia Caldon made two free throws and also scored a layup to help the Lady Indians stretch their lead to 31-22.
Kamryn Rogers made the 3-pointer to narrow the Sanford lead to 31-25 at the end of the period.
Kamryn Rogers scored to begin the fourth quarter and close the gap to 31-27. However, Edgar made one of two free throws, and Asia Caldon scored five straight points to give the Lady Indians a double-digit lead at 37-27.
Mortensen ended the run with two free throws, but Edgar did the same on the other end.
Tymberlynn Rogers scored a layup and then added a free throw.
Sangre’s rally began with Mortensen and Tymberlynn Rogers both scoring layups, and Metz made a layup and added a layup to tie the score at 39-39. Cheyenne Caldon made one of two free throws, but Tymberlynn Rogers had a chance to give the Lady T-Birds the lead. She too split at the line to again tie the score at 40-40 and send the game into overtime.
Cheyenne Caldon and Edgar both made a free throw to give the Lady Indians a 42-40 lead, but Metz drained a 3-pointer to give Sangre its only lead at 43-42.
Cheyenne Caldon made two free throws and later scored a layup to put Sanford back on top at 46-43. Asia Caldon made one of two free throws to increase the lead to four.
Mortensen drained a trey to bring the Lady T-Birds within 47-46, but Cheyenne Caldon made two free throws to give Sanford a 3-point lead with 18 seconds left. Sangre drew up a play in an effort to tie the score, but the ball was knocked away and time expired.
The Caldon sisters led Sanford with Cheyenne scoring 18 points and Asia scoring 16.
Mortensen led Sangre with 14 points and Tymberlynn Rogers added 10.
Sanford (7-1) will host Monte Vista today. Sangre de Cristo (8-2) will play at Swink next Friday.
