Sanford Mustangs sweep Trinidad Miners

SANFORD – The Sanford High School volleyball team opened its Class 2A Southern Peaks League season on Thursday as it hosted Trinidad at the SHS gym.

The Lady Mustangs got the league season going in the right direction as they scored a three-set sweep of the Lady Miners.

“It was a great win,” said Sanford coach Melissa Faucette. “The girls played great. We kind of slowed down in the third set. But they did a good job.”

Sanford scored the first point of the first set, but Trinidad scored two in a row for a 2-1 lead.

That would be the only time the Lady Miners led in the first set. The Lady Mustangs scored five straight points, and after Trinidad answered with a 2-0 run, Sanford went on a 6-0 rally to extend its lead to 12-4.

After a brief Trinidad side out, Sanford went on an 8-1 run for a 20-6 advantage.

Sanford finished the set with a 5-4 run and it took the set by a score of 25-10.

The Lady Mustangs scored the first three points of the second set. They continued the momentum and increased the lead to 8-3.

The Lady Miners scored three points in a row, but the Lady Mustangs answered with a 3-0 run of their own.

Trinidad narrowed the margin to 12-10 before Sanford scored seven unanswered points for a 19-11 lead. It then closed out the set with a 6-4 rally to win the second set 25-14.

Trinidad started the third set on fire as it took a 5-1 advantage. Sanford responded with a 5-0 run and took a 6-5 lead.

The Lady Miners regained the lead at 12-9 before the Lady Mustangs went on a 13-2 run for a 21-15 edge. Trinidad had one last rally and closed within 21-19, but Sanford scored the final four points for a 25-19 win.

Kashley Canty led the Sanford offense with 37 assists. Makenzie Reynolds and Keylee Anderson led the Lady Mustangs’ hitting game with 11 kills each. Alyssa Edgar had nine kills.

Reynolds led in service aces with four and Canty had two.

Sanford (7-2, 1-0 Southern Peaks) will travel to Crested Butte on Saturday.
