SANFORD — A competitive game got out of hand quickly in favor of the home team Friday night. Sanford cleared Dove Creek in a one-sided game, 64-12.
The undefeated season for Sanford (8-0) is showing no signs of stopping. A big win over Mancos paid big dividends for a Sanford team that has been looking for a challenge all season. Before meeting Dove Creek on Friday, Sanford had faced just one team with a winning record all season and that was the Mancos Blue Jays. That’s where Dove Creek (5-3) came in.
Both squads took a while to find traction on Friday, with 4 punts and a fumble hampering the game’s first 5 drives. That was when Sanford found their legs. On the Sanford 35-yard line, it was one play, one score. Kelton Gartrell raced around the right edge and outran everyone to the end zone for the first score of the game. A failed 2-point attempt kept it 6-0, Sanford’s favor.
Dove Creek answered right back when Gauge Thompson took the ensuing kickoff for a score making it a new game at 6-6. Sanford would take over on their own 44-yard line thanks to a failed onside kick attempt. A run from Thomas Faucette gained 9 and the home squad would go back to their primary weapon, Gartrell. The Sanford sophomore found the edge and went 47 yards for a second touchdown, the two-point conversion made the lead 14-6.
On Dove Creek’s next possession, the defensive pressure forced an off-target pass and into the waiting hands of none other than Gartrell for an interception. This time Clay Canty got his number called and would take the run 39 yards to paydirt putting Sanford up 20-6.
Following a Bulldog punt, it was Sanford’s ball. Dove Creek’s struggling offense would need to cash in on a Sanford mistake. On the second play of the possession, a high snap became a fumble and it was Bulldog’s ball on the home 13-yard line, two plays later and a pass from Chorbin Cressler to Gauge Thompson closed the lead to 20-12. That was as close as Dove Creek would get for the remainder of the game. Sanford went wild to the tune of 44 points down the stretch, routing the visiting Bulldogs 64-12.
The win marks the second winning team that Sanford has defeated this season. The Mean Green Machine will look to make it three next week when they take on Sargent (6-2) Nov. 1 at 6 p.m.
