ALAMOSA – The Sanford and Sargent high school girls basketball teams advanced to the Class 2A District 1 Tournament championship game after recording semifinal wins Thursday at Plachy Hall.
The Lady Indians defeated Monte Vista 46-16, while the Lady Farmers scored a 36-27 win over Del Norte.
Sanford 46, Monte Vista 16
Avryn Smith gave the Lady Indians the early lead with a 3-point basket. Stephanie Lopez made two free throws to account for the Lady Pirates’ first points, but Sanford went on a 7-0 run to close out the first quarter and it led 10-2.
Cheville Garcia scored Monte Vista’s first points of the second quarter, but that would be the Lady Pirates’ only scoring. The Lady Indians scored the final nine points of the period for s 19-4 advantage at halftime.
Sanford outscored Monte Vista 9-6 in the third quarter. Alyssa Edgar accounted for six of the Lady Indians’ points to lead them to a 28-10 lead.
Sanford pulled away in the fourth quarter by scoring 18 points and limiting Monte Vista to just six.
Edgar led the Lady Indians with 11 points. Syriah Bernal led the Lady Pirates with six.
Sargent 37, Del Norte 26
The first quarter was a low-scoring period with both teams tallying only four points apiece. It was also a low-scoring second period with the Lady Tigers leading the Lady Farmers 10-8 at halftime.
Sargent outscored Del Norte 13-7 in the third quarter to take a 21-17 lead. The Lady Tigers pulled to within 23-21 early in the fourth, however, the Lady Farmers finished the period with a 14-5 run to take an 11-point victory.
Gabby Jones was Sargent’s top scorer with 16 points. Kelci Madrid was Del Norte’s scoring leader with 12 points.
Saturday schedule
The final two games are set for Saturday. In the third-place game, Monte Vista (12-9) will face Del Norte (10-11) at 11 a.m. Sanford (20-1) and Sargent (18-3) will play for the district championship at 6 p.m.
