Sargent takes on Gilpin County Eagles

ALAMOSA— After going a perfect 11 and 0 the Farmers were playoff bound, they breezed by Soroco and West Grand by a combined 123-50. They were one game away from the coveted state title game and the only team standing in their way were the Akron Rams.

The Farmers put up 26 points in the first half and led 26-20 going into the locker room. In the second half unfortunately they fell stagnant while Akron kept working, The Farmers watched as Akron accounted for all the third quarter points making it 33-26.

After Ryan Davis connected with Ty Harrison to make it a one-point game 33-32. With ten minutes left in the game Sargent went for it all with a two-point conversion and failed. A decision that would haunt them as no more points were scored for the remainder of the contest. The Farmers would miss the State Championship game for want of a point. Marking the second year that Sargent fell in the Semi Finals.

Flash-forward a year and Sargent has earned a 6-3 record and are riding a 6 game winning streak into their next charge for the title. The first step on the path is Gilpin County.

Gilpin County is a school in Black Hawk, Colorado, a municipality east of Golden. The Eagles have gone 7-2 through the regular season en route to having earned the number ten seed. Gilpin County has found most of their success on the shoulders of the number nine total yardage leader in the state Austin Boulter.  The Eagles live and die by the 6’1” 210 lb Boulter as he accounts for 65 percent of all touchdowns with 29 and 63 percent of the offense with 2,309 yards.

Boulter made an impact on defense as well as he contributed 6 of the Eagles’ 13 sacks from his defensive line position. If the Farmers want to get by Gilpin County it starts with knowing where Boulter is at all times. In Gilpin County’s worse loss of the season Boulter was kept to 140 yards of total offense and the Eagles were routed by West Grand 52-0.

The Farmers aren’t without their own weapons as signal caller Ryan Davis has accrued 865 yards with his arm and 759 with his legs for a combined 21 touchdowns. Sargent spells Davis on the ground with Trevor Milne who has garnered 686 yards and 12 touchdowns. Through the air they look to Eddie Gonzalez who has caught for 409 yards and 7 touchdowns.

Sargent faces Boulter and the Eagles this Friday night at 6 p.m.
