Shriver, Woods optimistic

The proposed design for the new multi-purpose building at Ski-Hi Park from Spencer Architecture Studio.

Plans are underway for the revitalization of Ski Hi Park. The Friends of Ski Hi Park group is seeking to bring much-needed renovations to the complex that is considered a centerpiece for San Luis Valley happenings.

The idea of restoring the park began in 2006 when the City of Monte Vista and user groups connected to the complex came together to develop a master plan.

In 2010, the arena grandstands were restored thanks in part to funding from Great Outdoors Colorado. Since that time, the user groups have come to a consensus that there is a need to reconstruct the multi-purpose building to meet the community’s needs. Furthermore, the project has the potential to provide a space that could be utilized for emergency use if needed.

Karla Shriver and Kathy Woods currently lead the group.  Thus far, the effort has produced a design proposal for a new structure from Spencer Architecture Studio.

Also, stakeholder groups such as the SLV Ski Hi Stampede Committee have committed to supporting the effort.

Both Shriver and Woods noted timing and funds would be crucial to the project’s success going forward. In an attempt to address the funding side of the project, the City of Monte Vista is now promoting a ballot initiative known as the One Cent Project Fund.

If passed, the fund would generate an additional $400,000 in annual revenue.

The funds would then be divided into three pieces: $160,000 to the Ski Hi project, $140,000 to public works, and $100,000 to Police.

The One-Cent Fund will play a central role in how the project unfolds. With a design now in place, the next step will be to ensure that funding for construction and future maintenance is secured. Shriver and Woods expressed optimism for the future of the Friends of Ski Hi Park initiative, observing that there is growing public will towards a common goal.
