Some Can’t Avoid It

In these times of uncertainty due to the COVID-19 outbreak, there are those that respond because it’s their duty.

As I watched more than 20 firefighters battle a home fire just west of Alamosa on Thursday, I was reminded that some cannot shelter in place, or avoid personal contact.

As a former firefighter, I watched brothers in arms doing what they had to do to try and save a local home. There was no time for socially distancing, they do what they have to do. Dedication is what it is and call of duty is what it is.

As Denver Fire deals with at least 10 positive cases of Coronavirus among their ranks, I watched over 20 mostly volunteer firefighters from Alamosa, Monte Vista and DFPC (also local) work shoulder to shoulder to try to save a home. They didn’t have to be there, but when the call came in, they responded.

They’re not alone.

We have a large number of first responders throughout the San Luis Valley that answer the call daily not knowing for certain what they’re exposing themselves too; firefighters, law enforcement, EMTs, health providers, etc.

With more than 4,000 confirmed cases of the virus in Colorado and God knows how many across the country, we need to pay special tribute to those who are considered “essential” without concern to their personal wellbeing.

God forbid we have a major disaster locally and those we count on are not available due to COVID-19. Wildfire season is here and continued dry conditions increase our risk.

Please help protect our firefighters and other first responders by avoiding public contact. For once, follow government orders and stay at home if you can, especially if you’re experiencing even minor symptoms.

They are there for us. Shall we never forget.

And on another note. . . kudos to Alamosa Police Chief, Ken Anderson and his staff for retrieving stolen goods that even included yours truly.

Two weeks ago, we had a number of personal items stolen from our home which included two large backpacks filled with gear and two bow and arrows. All but one of the bows has been retrieved and returned to us.

As we reported about a week ago, property crime in the city has increased 18% in the past month and it’s good to know that our local law enforcement is on top of it. Thanks, again!
