Sue Young

Long-time Alamosa resident, Eleanor Susan Young passed away Feb. 16, 2023, after a short illness. She was 76. Sue was born in West Virginia to Ralph and Janice Young. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Music from West Minster Choir College in New Jersey, and taught school for a couple of years. Then, hearing the call of the West, she packed up her horses and dogs and moved to Durango, Colo., where she worked at a music store and led trail rides in the mountains.

After a few years Sue moved to Alamosa, and with a friend, opened a music store, M and S Music, and later had a wood-working business. She went back to school, where she earned a master's degree in Guidance and Counseling from Adams State College. Sue then worked for Social Services in Rio Grande County and later in Alamosa County. She also worked part-time for Tu Casa, a domestic abuse treatment center in Alamosa. For the last 15 plus years of her career, Sue worked in private practice in Counseling and Mediation.

One of the great joys in Sue’s life was music. For many years she was the choir director at the First United Methodist Church in Alamosa, and also directed the Sweet Adelines Barbershop Chorus. She was later a member of The Great Range Band based in Blanca, Colo., where she played guitar and sang.

Along with music, Sue enjoyed model railroading, wood working, reading, camping, and fishing. She is survived by her brother, Donn (Linda), and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Cremation was chosen. There will be a Celebration of Life for Sue on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2023, at 5 p.m., at the First United Methodist, 2005 Mullins Ave., Alamosa. Donations are suggested for Tu Casa, and will be accepted at the event, or can be mailed to Tu Casa, Inc. PO Box 473, Alamosa, CO, 81101.
