Suicide Prevention & Awareness event today

ALAMOSA — There are 10.7 million adults in the U.S. suffering to the point of wanting to end their life. As a society, communities and friends and family, we can make a difference by preparing ourselves to recognize the signs that lead to suicide. If we can identify the signs of those suffering, we can, in turn, help them find relief.

Thanks to San Luis Valley Behavioral Health, the SLV community has an exceptional opportunity to listen and learn from those who have walked this lonely road. Local family members of those that have died from suicide will share their story. Attendees will also have the unique opportunity to hear from Kevin Hines. Kevin attempted to take his life by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge at the age of 19. He says the instant his hands left the rail, “I regretted jumping — I didn’t want anyone to think I wanted to die. I just wanted the pain to stop.” Hines now travels the world as a mental health advocate. He’s teaching first-hand what brought him to the point of wanting to take his life and what changed that desire. Kevin will help listeners to build a toolkit for maintaining their mental wellness, and that of loved ones. He will expound upon what drives suicidal behaviors and help attendees improve suicide risk prevention skills — empowering us to be¬ ready to help those in need.

This presentation is open to everyone; we invite you to come to learn and prepare yourself to be a support to those in need.
