Suspect stabs CCSO deputy and injures another STAFF REPORT

CONEJOS COUNTY — A Romeo man is facing a slew of charges, including attempted murder, after allegedly stabbing a Conejos County Sheriff’s Office deputy on May 30.

On Tuesday night at about 10:30 p.m., Conejos County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the 300 block of Blanca Street in Romeo on a report of a man attempting to break into a residence. Dispatch informed the deputies that they were on the phone with an elderly woman who was inside the house.

As soon as the first deputy arrived on the scene and exited her patrol vehicle, a man appeared out of the darkness and allegedly attacked her with a knife, stabbing her two times. Despite being injured, the deputy was able to fight and get away. She was then able to deploy her taser, but it was ineffective on the subject.

The second deputy arrived on the scene and the suspect ran on foot toward the alleyway. The second deputy pursued the suspect and deployed his taser, as well, but it was also ineffective.

The subject was throwing rocks at both deputies and vehicle, causing damage and injuring the second deputy.

La Jara Police Department, Alamosa County Sheriff's Office, and Colorado State Patrol arrived on scene where tasers were also deployed by two ACSO deputies. They were also ineffective. Finally, the subject was taken into custody.

Both Conejos County deputies were transported to the Conejos County Hospital where they were treated and released.

The subject was identified as Robert Romero, 25, of Romeo, and booked into the Conejos County Jail on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, felony menacing, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, attempted first-degree burglary and harassment.

The names of the injured deputies were released at this time.

This case is still under investigation by Conejos County Sheriff’s Office and no further information will be released at this time.
