The Colorado Rookies go 4-1 at tournament

DODGE CITY, Kansas — The Colorado Rookies from the San Luis Valley went 4-1 at the Tent City 13 U tournament in Dodge City, Kansas June 30th – July 2nd.

Listed are highlights from the games, with the most recent first.

Game 5 (Sunday,

July 2)

• The Rookies defeated Garden City Thunder despite allowing 4-run inning.

• Garden City Thunder scored four runs in the second inning, but Rookies still won 15-5 on Sunday. The big inning for Garden City Thunder came thanks to a single by Whithurst, a double by Johnson, and an error.

• Rookies took the lead for good with seven runs in the second inning. In the second Hayden Shawcroft singled off of Johnson, driving in two runs, Johnson uncorked a wild pitch, scoring two runs, Darin Barrows singled off of Johnson, driving in two runs, and there was an error, scoring one run.

• Rookies collected 11 hits. Shawcroft, Bates Roles, Donovan Ramirez, and Barrows each collected multiple hits for Rookies. Barrows, Ramirez, Roles, and Shawcroft each managed two hits to lead Rookies. Rookies stole eight bases during the game as three players stole more than one. Mason Claunch led the way with two.

• Garden City Thunder had seven hits in the game. Perez and Johnson each collected multiple hits for Garden City Thunder.

Pitching really well, Darin Barrows earned the victory for the Rookies.

Game 4

• Rookies grabbed the lead in third inning for a victory over McPherson and escaped elimination from the tournament.

• Rookies defeated McPherson 12-2 on Sunday after taking the lead late in the game. The game was tied at one with Rookies batting in the bottom of the third when Mason Claunch tripled off of Tyler, driving in two runs.

• Rookies secured the victory thanks to seven runs in the fourth inning. Rookies’ big inning was driven by a single by Kade Jones, a walk by Darin Barrows, a walk by Mason Claunch, a walk by Kelton Gartrell, a walk by Kasey Jones, and a walk by Hayden Shawcroft.

• Rookies took an early lead in the first inning. Claunch grounded out, scoring one run.

• McPherson knotted the game up at one in the top of the second inning. Camden drove in one when he singled in the second inning.

• Rookies scored seven runs in the fourth inning. Rookies scored on a single by Jones, a walk by Barrows, a walk by Claunch, a walk by Gartrell, a walk by Jones, and a walk by Shawcroft.

• Barrows, Bates Roles, Jones, Landry Roles, Donovan Ramirez, Jones, Shawcroft, Gartrell, and Claunch each collected one hit to lead Rookies.

• Mason Claunch earned the victory for the Rookies.

Game 3 (first round of tournament)

• Ulysses baseball captured the lead early to defeat Rookies.

• Rookies fell behind early and couldn’t come back in a 7-1 loss to Ulysses Baseball on Saturday. Ulysses Baseball scored on a single by Justin, an error, and a double by Jimmy in the first inning.

• Ulysses Baseball captured the lead in the first inning. An error scored one run for Ulysses Baseball.

• Ulysses Baseball scored three runs in the seventh inning. The big inning for Ulysses Baseball came thanks to a triple by Matt, a single by Jimmy, and a groundout.

• Darin Barrows, Donovan Ramirez, and Mason Claunch each managed one hit to lead Rookies.

• Ulysses Baseball collected ten hits. Jimmy and Matt each collected multiple hits for Ulysses Baseball. Jimmy went 3-for-3 at the plate as he led the team with two runs batted in.

Game 2

• Rookies took some time to pull away from Wind Dawgs

• Rookies and Wind Dawgs played a taut affair on Saturday, but Rookies eventually prevailed 7-6 after taking the lead for good in the third inning. The game was tied at six with Rookies batting in the bottom of the third when Martin walked Darin Barrows to drive in a run.

• Rookies built a five-run lead in the second inning and then held off Wind Dawgs’ charge. Wind Dawgs scored five runs in the failed comeback on a single by Cabera, a double by Feltman, and a error.

• Rookies captured the lead in the first inning. Kelton Gartrell tripled on the first pitch of the at bat in the first inning, scoring one run.

• Rookies took the lead for good with one run in the third inning. In the third Martin walked Darin Barrows to drive in a run.

• Rookies scored five runs in the second inning. Rookies scored on a single, an error, a single by Gartrell, and a single by Landry Roles.

• Gartrell went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Rookies in hits.

• Kasey Jones earned the victory on the mound for the Rookies.

Game 1

• Rookies jumped out to early lead in victory over GB Panthers as Darin Barrows pitched a low inning game.

• An early lead helped Rookies defeat GB Panthers 9-2 on Friday. Rookies scored on a single by Kelton Gartrell in the first inning and a single by Garrett Smith in the second inning.

• Rookies secured the victory thanks to six runs in the seventh inning. Rookies’ big inning was driven by a single by Kelton Gartrell, an error, a single, a single by Kasey Jones, and a walk.
