The puzzle of plastic

Plastic is something that millions of people use daily. However, what might not be immediately apparent is the growing impact that it is now having on the environment, particularly water sources.

According to the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, more than 300 million tons of plastic waste is produced annually. Out of those massive amounts, approximately just 10 percent of that gets recycled. As a result, it is estimated that 7 million tons of plastic enter waterways every year. Furthermore, plastic does not completely decompose in water. Instead, it breaks down into minute particles that have the potential to be harmful to fish and animals. Numerous organizations are working to address this growing challenge.

Although this issue is occurring on a global scale, there are numerous suggestions of ways that individuals can be a part of the solution. This includes simple measures such as: refusing single-use plastic items (shopping bags, bottles); Choosing to buy items not packaged with plastic; participating in local cleanup efforts; choosing a product that does not contain microbeads; recycling and proper trash disposal; and finally spreading the word.

While the issue of plastics and pollution is not going to be disappearing any time soon, there is something that can be done about it.
