CONEJOS COUNTY — A man wanted for attempted murder in Kansas is in custody in Conejos County where he is also being held on local charges, the Conejos County Sheriff’s Office announced on Tuesday.

Duane J. Leach, 45, of Kansas, and Heather Madrid, 34, also of Kansas, first came to the sheriff’s office attention on July 25 when a vehicle they were in went off the roadway on Massey Creek Road, Antonito. When deputies responded to the incident, the couple initially provided false names to the deputies.

After further investigation Madrid told deputies Leach’s correct name. Both Leach and Madrid were placed into custody and later transported to the Conejos County Sheriff’s Office.

Leach’s identity was later confirmed through a fingerprint scanner provided by Colorado State Patrol. Leach had an active no-bond warrant out of Kansas for attempted murder and fraud.

According to the Conejos County Sheriff’s Office, Madrid later admitted to deputies that she and Leach broke into a storage shed, stole items and took the items back to their vehicle. Deputies confirmed with the property owner that the shed was broken into, and after obtaining a search warrant for the couple’s vehicle, the stolen items were located and taken for evidence.
