Three locals to play in All-State football games

ALAMOSA – The football players from the smaller San Luis Valley high schools will play in All-State games this weekend.

Eight-man All-State game

Gauge Lewis of Sanford will play for the south tram in the 8-man All-State Game on Friday at 7 p.m. at Gilpin County Stadium in Black Hawk.

Lewis led the Mustangs in rushing last season with 916 yards on 114 carries and he scored 11 touchdowns. He was second on the team ion receiving with 14 receptions for 203 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 197 yards on punt returns and 24 on kickoff returns. Lewis also completed his only pass attempt for 33 yards and a touchdown.

On defense, Lewis had 41 tackles and three pass interceptions.

Sanford had a record of seven wins and four losses in 2022.

Six-man All-State game

Two members of the Sierra Grande football team will play in the 6-man All-State game which takes place on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Genoa-Hugo High School in Hugo. Both will play for the south team.

Angelo Valencia-Lucero was the Panthers’ leading rusher with 1,110 yards on 127 carries and he also scored 24 touchdowns. He also had 20 receptions for 348 yards and five touchdowns.

On defense, Valencia-Lucero had 97 tackles and 1 ½ sacks. He also had five pass interceptions accumulating 108 yards and two touchdowns.

Diego Romero ran for 91 yards on 13 carries and he scored one touchdown. He had one pass reception for 39 yards.

Romero had 65 tackles and one interception for 25 yards.

Sierra Grande won seven games and lost four last season.
