Thunderbirds hold off Tigers for win

Sangre de Cristo senior Jake Slane (11) splits the Del Norte defenders Diego Heredia (12) and Joel Rosales (4) Saturday night.

DEL NORTE — Through five straight games Sangre de Cristo (5-0) has persevered and stayed perfect. Saturday night they went in to Del Norte and took down the Tigers in a 42-37 game.

For the second time in the last two games Sangre de Cristo was facing a 2A team, and for the second time in the last two games Sangre’s opponent would close the distance in the second half.  Del Norte (3-7) has struggled to find consistency this season. As of yet the Tigers have been unable to string two wins together.  Come Saturday night, the boys played a rather slow paced game combining for just 35 points in the first half, Sangre de Cristo leading 21-14.

At the start of the half the scoring was relegated to one team at a time, the two teams trading scoring runs. The Thunderbirds went first with 6 unanswered points. Del Norte then followed with 14 unanswered points of their own to take their second lead of the game at 28-27. It was short lived however as Sangre’s Jake Slane drove inside and ended the drought for the T-Birds to reclaim the lead.

From there the Thunderbirds would pace Del Norte all the way to the game’s 42-37 conclusion.  Sangre de Cristo will open their league against league rival, Creede (2-5) Dec. 20 starting at 7:30 p.m. Del Norte will be back in action come Jan. 11 when they start their league schedule against Crested Butte (1-2).
