Tiger wrestlers go 1-1 at home Triangular

DEL NORTE — Dolores and Ignacio were on hand for Del Norte’s wrestling triangular Thursday night. In the Tiger’s first meeting of the night the Tigers dropped a 34-13 contest to Ignacio. Against Dolores the Tigers got a shutout via a 39-0 score.

Del Norte was last in action in Dove Creek for the Dog Fight Tournament. As a team the Tigers took fifth place with 43 team points. Led by Malachi Gallegos, Preston Terrell and Keegan Medina. Gallegos and Terrell placed second in their respective weight classes, Medina finished third at 152.

Thursday night Del Norte started off on the wrong foot against Ignacio spotting the visiting Bobcats an immediate 12-point lead due to forfeits. The first contested weight was 113 pounds, and featured a bout between Del Norte’s Malachi Gallegos and Isaac Welker. Gallegos wasted no time and put both of Welker’s shoulders on the mat 25 seconds in to get Del Norte on the board.

Ignacio’s Hunter Robbins and Skieler Grooms added another ten points to the Bobcat lead with victories over Brett Worz and Natalie Benavides by fall and major decision respectively.

At 145 pounds Del Norte’s Isaac Peerman collected a takedown in each period outscoring his opponent Shawn Campbell 6-1 to add three more to the Tiger’s team score.

By the time Keegan Medina and Tyler Barnes took the mat at 152 pounds, Barnes and the Bobcats led Del Norte 22-9. Medina scored at will with three takedowns in the first two periods. In the final frame Medina polished off the win with a takedown, two escapes and two near-fall points to complete the 12-3 major decision for the home team.

With hopes rising, Ignacio’s Dustin Sanchez effectively shut the door with a second period pin on Fischer Jones putting the visitors up 28-13. The final 6 points came from Cesar Pedregon in a victory by fall over Del Norte’s Preston Terrell to give Ignacio a 34-13 team win.

After watching Ignacio shut out Dolores the Tigers retook the mat for their second dual of the night, this one against Dolores. Dolores forfeited five weight classes to the home team to give Del Norte a 30 point advantage.

At 138 pounds it was Tristan Medina against Dolores’ Jalen Boyd. Medina put Boyd in position twice collecting 6 near-fall points in the first period. Medina would outlast Boyd in the next two periods taking a 10-7 decision. Preston Terrell got a chance to redeem himself against Dolores’ Bryan Escarcega at 195 pounds. Terrell finished Escarcega off inside the first period to finalize Del Norte’s 39-0 shut out victory.

The Tigers will head east this Saturday for the Pete and Inna Gomez Invitational hosted by John Mall in Walsenburg.
