Title IX, speak out & against sexual assault

ALAMOSA -- “Sexual assault is any type of sexual activity or contact that you do not consent to. Sexual assault can happen through physical force or threats of force or if the attacker gave the victim drugs or alcohol as part of the assault. Sexual assault includes rape and sexual coercing”. Sexual assault occurs between friends, family, acquaintances, or strangers. According to Colorado crime statistics, sexual assault most frequently is done by an acquaintance (38.3%).  In 2020, RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) reported that 36.1% female, 12.2 male, and 23.1% of TGQN (transgender, genderqueer, nonconforming) college students are sexually assaulted each year. These numbers do not reflect unreported sexual assaults. Title IX is a law passed in 1972 which states that “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” Adams State University’s Title IX office serves many students in any matter mentioned above; this includes students that are victims of sexual assault. The Title IX office and their staff welcomes any students to speak up on a sexual assault, whether they are experiencing it themselves or have witnessed someone else experiencing sexual assault. The Title IX office also reminds everyone that there are many ways to combat sexual assault on campuses: including empowering youth to speak out against unwanted contact. Educate yourself on what sexual assault is and how you can respond to someone disclosing sexual assault. Listening and believing are key to providing support to a survivor of sexual assault.
