Top Shots hold off Hot Shots

ALAMOSA – The Top Shots held off a fierce rally by the Hot Shots in the 36th Annual Arby’s All-Star Game Thursday at the Alamosa High School gym with the Top Shots winning by a score of 57-56.

Del Norte’s Abigail Rivera gave the Hot Shots the early lead, but Sierra Grande’s Mia Esquer-Montoya put the Top Shots into the lead with a 3-point basket. Brooke Gonzales and Sydney Jackson, both of Alamosa, put the Hot Shots back into the lead at 6-3, but Alamosa’s Charley Higham, and Esquer-Montoya helped the Top Shots pull within 8-7.

Sargent’s Stephanie Johnson hit a three, but the Top Shots got two baskets from Jackson and one from Centauri’s Amaya Garcia to take a 13-11 lead.

Alamosa’s Miranda Geringer hit a long 3-pointer to tie the score at 15-15, but Higham scored a layup, and Esquer-Montoya made a trey for a 20-15 Top Shots lead.

Sanford’s Alyssa Edgar and Antonito’s Patricia Silvas both scored to reduce the lead to 20-19. Garcia scored three baskets and added a free throw, followed by Sangre de Cristo’s Peyton Metz scoring to extend the Top Shots’ lead to 29-20.

Johnson ended the run, but Monte Vista’s Lexi Marquez scored two baskets to give the Top Shots a 33-22 lead at halftime.

Esquer-Montoya and Garcia opened the second half with baskets for a 37-22 lead. Sierra Grande’s Mariana Loya split at the line and Geringer knocked down a jumper to reduce the deficit to 37-25.

Sierra Grande’s Lindsey Paine scored for the Top Shots, but Jackson scored two baskets.

The teams then traded baskets before the Hot Shots got three baskets from Rivera to pull within 51-45. Alamosa’s Mary Masias ended the rally, but the Hot Shots scored seven unanswered points to close within 53-52.

Garcia gave the Top Shots some breathing room but Rivera and Gonzales both scored to give the Hot Shots a 56-55 lead.

Garcia scored with 1:54 to play to wrap up the scoring.

Garcia led the Top Shots in scoring with 11 points and Esquer-Montoya was next with 10. Monte Vista’s Syriah Bernal led the Hot Shots with eight points.
