Top Shots take Arby’s boys basketball game

ALAMOSA – The Top Shots rolled to an 87-69 win over the Hot Shots in the 36th Annual Arby’s All-Star Game Thursday at the Alamosa High School gym.

Sanford’s McCray Larsen gave the Hot Shots an early 2-0 lead, but Monte Vista’s Alejandro Felix tied the score. Larsen scored again, but Alamosa’s Jayr Almeida also scored to knot the score at 4-4.

Larsen, Centauri’s Kolten Johnson and Monte Vista’s Andrew Chavez all scored for a 10-4 Hot Shots lead. But Creede’s Ryder Whitehorn, and Leighton Curtis and Josh Taylor, both of Centauri, all scored to deadlock the contest at 10-10.

The teams then traded baskets before Del Norte’s Tyler Gallegos hit a 3-point basket for a 17-16 Hot Shots lead. That would be the final time they would be in front as the Top Shots scored 14 unanswered points for 30-17 advantage.

Larsen scored two baskets to reduce the lead to 30-21, but Del Norte’s Ben Parra and Almeida both scored.

Alamosa’s Luke Christensen made a 3-pointer, but Curtis closed out the first half scoring with the Top Shots leading 36-24 at the break.

Larsen opened the second half scoring with six points and his Sanford teammate Craig Ford drained a three to reduce the deficit to 36-31.

The teams again traded baskets before the Hot Shots pulled to within 46-42.

The Top Shots got hot again and they outscored the Hot Shots 21-7 to extend the lead to 67-49.

The Hot Shots closed to within 67-56, but they were outscored 20-13 in the final 5:44.

Larsen led all scorers with 20 points. Almeida led the Top Shots with 15 points, followed by Taylor with 12.
