Trains to cause traffic delays through April 24

ALAMOSA — The San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad will be moving hundreds of train cars beginning Friday, April 21, beginning at 12 p.m. from west of Monte Vista through Alamosa and then south to Antonito. The operations are anticipated to last until Monday, April 24.

Once the operations begin, San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad will continue the movement of train cars around the clock in order to end the operations as soon as possible. The length of trains will range between 150 cars up to 220 cars.

The San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad has notified regional first responders and these agencies are aware of the car movements. The City of Alamosa feels that it is critical for the public to be pre-warned and informed of these movements. There has been and will be significant communication between the railroad and first responders during this operation.

Unfortunately, because of the long trains motorists should expect delays that could last 15 minutes or longer. In an effort to address the needs of motorists, San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad will allow State Avenue to clear after it pulls through and before it begins its turn south to Antonito. During the time of this operation, it is advised to use alternate routes if possible or allow extra time for travel.

Questions in reference to this movement can be directed to railroad representative Brett Wallace 877-726-7245 or Chief of Police Oakes at 719-589-2548.
