ALAMOSA — Please join SLV Chapter of Trout Unlimited for its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, February 26th at 7 p.m. at the SLV Health, Education and Conference Center at 1921 Main Street in Alamosa.

Kevin Terry will be presenting a program “Flash, Boom Crash!” on a recent TU project at Spruce Lakes in the Weminuche Wilderness. These lakes are home to a recreational population of the native Rio Grande cutthroat trout and they are actually reservoirs with water rights and small earthen dams. The reservoirs need to be maintained according to the State Engineer’s Dam Safety standards, which is challenging given that modern mechanized tools are prohibited in the wilderness. Trout Unlimited, in partnership with the water rights owners and the USFS devised a plan to use explosives to drop over 400 dead spruce trees that were likely to fall into the reservoirs and clog up the spillways. The video alone is worth seeing!!

Additionally, Kevin will present on an upcoming TU project to install water temperature sensors on the Rio Grande and Conejos Rivers. The information will be available online through a partnership with the Division of Water Resources, creating a great way for anglers to protect the resource and also plan their fishing around optimal stream temperatures. Lastly, Kevin and the TU board will host an open discussion concerning the upcoming Conejos River habitat work that the chapter has been planning in coordination with CPW and Riverbend Engineering.
