ALAMOSA — The Valley Courier is proud to announce its newest addition. Stephen Jiron has been named the new sports editor for the Courier.
Stephen is a native to Alamosa. He had always taken an interest in sports from a very young age. He and his brothers decided their favorite players and their favorite teams. Stephen chose Barry Sanders and even though he is a Colorado native he took to the Detroit Lions. Barry Sanders embodied everything Stephen thought an athlete should have — talent, character and humility. Since then it was set in stone — through thick and thin, and admittedly there has been more thin than thick.
After he completed his high school education in 2006 with Alamosa High School Stephen took the typical path and began his higher education with Adams State. He then took some time off and moved up to Colorado Springs. There he started writing for a website called Cover32, which gave him the opportunity to cover the Detroit Lions. The experience showed him what a job like this could be like.
After writing for Cover32 for a few months while working a job where he struggled to make ends meet, he decided it was time to get serious about his education and move back to Alamosa. There he changed his major to mass communication and resumed the path towards getting a degree. He worked nights while going to school during the day.
The summer of 2015 had come and the writing bug had bitten again. He quit his job and found work on campus as a sports information assistant. There he was given the reigns to three different teams and more solid writing experience. In 2016 Stephen graduated from Adams State University with a bachelor’s in mass communication.
