Veteran Fields program accepting applications

ALAMOSA — On Saturday, April 28, members of the Veterans Coalition of the San Luis Valley (VC-SLV), Adams State University’s veteran organization and community supporters came together at White Crow Ranch to assist a fellow veteran as part of VC-SLV’s “Veteran Fields” program.

“Veteran Fields” is a program funded by the Colorado Health Foundation to help veterans transition and heal through agriculture. “Veteran Fields” connects veterans eager to learn with area farmers and ranchears who are willing to teach.

White Crow Ranch (WCR) is one of several pilot projects selected by the Veterans Coalition to aid new and existing veteran farmers advance their dream. WCR specializes in high density micro farming, as well as true “free range chickens” and a fish farm all set in the serenity of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Veterans selected to work at WCR will receive one to three weeks on site of hands on experience. Besides clean air, clean water, hard work, and physical and mental challenges, each intern will receive great food, camaraderie and a fresh start.

If you are a veteran interested in learning more about this opportunity, or an area farmer or rancher, veteran or not, interested in how you can get involved, please contact the Veterans Coalition of the San Luis Valley (www.vcslv.info), c/o Matthew Ciezki ([email protected]). We will be accepting applications for the next phase of the “Veteran Fields” program until June 15.
