ALAMOSA — The Alamosa City Council Wednesday night unanimously voted in Jan Vigil as mayor pro tem, which will be effective during the next council meeting.

Council member and outgoing Mayor Pro Tem Liz Hensley, who held the position since early January 2018, thanked her fellow council members.

“I’m excited to have you as Mayor Pro Tem,” said Hensley to Vigil.

Jan said he supported rotating mayor pro tem every two years, and added that “I want to throw my hat into the ring.”

Hensley said she is supportive of rotating, and it was not long before the rest of  council followed suit and chose Vigil as their next mayor pro tem.

Alamosa Mayor Tye Coleman offered to pass out ballots, but council agreed there was no need for that since there were not multiple contestants.

Congratulations councilman Vigil,” Coleman said. “I’d like to thank you councilor Hensley for serving during the past two years.

“You have been a very active mayor pro tem. ... What you’ve done the past couple of years; you’ve been amazing and thank you for your time.”

Vigil complimented Hensley on all the work she had done as mayor pro tem.

“I want to thank of all of you because you’ve all been very supportive of me as mayor pro tem,” Hensley said. “I think that we’ve made a great team, and I feel that working so closely together that we’ve made great strides for our city and we will continue to do so.

“And I’d like to congratulate councilor Vigil and I know he’ll do a great job.”

Hensley, who was not present during the last council meeting, was sworn in Wednesday night after getting re-elected to her council seat by winning the Nov. 5 election.

The council also voted unanimously in favor of Ordinance No. 28-2019, which approved an intergovernmental agreement with the Alamosa Veteran Service for providing veteran assistance to local veterans.
