Wake the Bear- a call for artists

Alamosa — In 2007 Valley-Wide Health Systems held a fundraiser called The Grizzly Cultural Totems Project. There are 25 local artists that have joined forces to paint and otherwise adorn nine fiberglass, life-sized grizzly bears originally sculpted by wildlife artist Jim Gilmore.

One magnificent bear was leftover and has been hibernating all these long years. We want a local artist to paint/treat it LIVE (or at least complete the process LIVE) during the 2019 Arts Festival in Alamosa on Saturday, Sept. 7 outside at Main and San Juan.

The artist chosen to WAKE THE BEAR will receive a $500 honorarium on the day of the event. All materials chosen will be the artist’s responsibility. The bear is fiberglass, 82 inches long, 33 inches high, 25 inches wide, and is currently covered in grey primer.

Send a relevant resume, a rough design idea, and method of approach and medium(s) to Kelley at [email protected] by Monday, July 15. Pictures of past work are strongly encouraged.
