What’s Next...or rather What’s Going On?

I have had many questions in the last few days as to what is really going on with nursing homes and assisted living regarding the lock down and COVID-19. Well, what I can tell you is that back in June of 2020 I said it would be over a year before our seniors would be set free and l was laughed at. Look at where we are today. Seniors in nursing homes are still suffering terribly. And, it’s not the nursing home staff’s fault. The staff are also suffering a great deal due to the lock down.

While most of us are free to go about our business and do what we want and go where we want, seniors and healthcare workers in nursing homes are still being dictated to under state regulations from their state health departments. In Colorado, the state health department is putting a great burden on nursing home seniors and staff caring for them. All in the name of safety.

The seniors in nursing homes are the people who carried us through The Great Depression. They are the ones who fought the world wars. Who do we think we are by telling them what we think is best? How do we think they should be kept “safe?” Is this really “safe” for them? How “safe” has it been for them to be left all alone in rooms with no one to talk to but to listen to a television telling them that they are the vulnerable sickies who should be kept “safe” at all costs. While the rest of the world moans, gripes and complains how hard it is to be under lock down, they trudge on in their apartments, homes, tiny rooms that some share with another person.

How many of you just got out of your house and went for a drive? How many of you decided, to heck with it, I’m going to Wal-Mart as if going to Wal-Mart was marching into the depths of the Amazon at night with all kinds of dangers lurking in the shadows ready to pounce. Good Heavens! What happened to the people that live in the land of the free and the brave? I guarantee you. Our seniors did not live their lives like this in the heat of the wars or during the dust bowl days let alone the days of The Great Depression.

Our seniors in facilities are still not allowed many freedoms. Even now the freedom to go in and out of their room changes at any given moment. They are told to get back to their apartment. Put your mask back on. Where are you going? No. No. No. You have to go back to your room. This was good for them? This is how you want to live when you’re older?

All of you who are pissed off at me at this moment for daring to speak wouldn’t even think of your mom being in a nursing home right now. All of you who are in the healthcare system and know what’s really going on would do anything to keep your mom out of the nursing home wouldn’t you? Nobody is watching you read this article. So, go ahead. Get honest with yourself. You know exactly what I’m saying whether you admit it or not.

Seniors who are in long term care have no end in sight. They were given the golden carrot…”If you get the vaccine, your family will be able to see you. And, if your family gets the vaccine, they’ll be able to come to the facility.” That carrot disappeared in a puff of smoke. Now, they have been injected with an experimental vaccine (read the insert - it is not FDA approved) and family visits are allowed and not allowed depending on the health department’s determination or the facilities corporate office’s (who is under the gun by the banks who finance them) decisions.

What can you do to help? Or, do you even want to? Start speaking up for your person in the nursing home. You are not a victim. Stand up for them and for you! Call the local health department and ask what is their rule right now for the nursing home your loved one lives in. Once you know their rule, then go to the administrator of the nursing home and talk to them about their rules. This will give you the information you need to know who you need to speak with to make a difference. Call the corporate office and speak with them and confirm their rules. By speaking to all the players, you can get to the bottom of it. You’ll find out who is really blocking you from seeing your loved one.

Everyone who has a loved one in a nursing home or an assisted living needs to speak up. Families, you are powerful. The corporate offices listen to you, especially now. Speak up! Please, for the sake of all the older folks, speak up now! Your voice is loud. Get hollering!

God Bless you warriors in this great country called America. God Bless You and God Bless The United States of America!

Editors Note: Official FDA approval is a time consuming process. Priority for Operation Warp Speed, under the Trump Administration was protecting as much of the population from COVID-19 as quickly as possible. That said, a number of vaccines have the FDA’s Emergency Use Authorization, meaning the

“FDA may authorize unapproved medical products or unapproved uses of approved medical products to be used in an emergency to diagnose, treat, or prevent serious or life-threatening diseases or conditions caused by chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threat agents when certain criteria are met, including there are no adequate, approved, and available alternatives.”

In the past two months both major vaccines Pfizer and Moderna have already begun the application process for full FDA approval.
