Will the One Cent Fund Pass?

MONTE VISTA — Voters in the City of Monte Vista will decide whether or not to pass an initiative known as the One Cent Project Fund.

Should the measure pass, an anticipated $400,000 in additional revenue would be available to the City on an annual basis. The funds would then be divided into three sperate areas: $160,000 put towards the maintenance of the Ski Hi Complex $140,000 to the City’s Public Works Department and $100,0Å00 to the police department.

The Ski Hi Complex has long presented a challenge when it comes to maintenance costs. The One-Cent Fund would allocate revenue to provide for the long-term maintenance of the facility while maintaining a relatively low price for users. Also, the funds would assist the efforts of the Friends of Ski Hi Park, the citizen-driven coalition seeking to renovate the facility.

The second portion of the funding would go towards the improvement of streets and drainages throughout the City.

Furthermore, an annual Sidewalk Replacement Fund of $5,000 to $7,000.

Finally, the third portion of the revenue would go towards supporting the Monte Vista Police Department.

The monies would allow for the salary of an additional full-time officer, as well as any needed equipment upgrades.

Should the initiative become a reality, a citizen-based oversight committee would oversee the funds. The City has placed a question before its residents. The answer will come at the ballot box.
