ALAMOSA – The Adams State University Faculty Lecture “Between the Covers with Demimonde: Mining Historic Archives with Deep Imagination and Empathy,” speaks to writing historical poetry as accurately as possible without first person accounts. The lecture, by Kierstin Bridger, begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 14, in McDaniel Hall room 101.

Demimonde is a poetry collection of both persona poems as well as third person narrative accounts concerning turn-of-the 20th century prostitutes of the Old West. In the writing and giving voice to these women the research required Bridger to ask both deceptively obvious questions about pregnancy and disease as well as deeper questions about appropriation and heritage. “I concentrated my research to Colorado mining towns and the slant truths printed in newspapers of the era. I will speak about my methods as well as deliver some surprising research about Victorian contraceptives and medicinal recipes.”
