Yount releases first On the Mat wrestling rankings of season

ALAMOSA – Tim Yount released his first On the Mat high school wrestling rankings of the season on last Friday with 22 grapplers from the San Luis Valley being recognized.

The rankings were released prior to last weekend’s first competitions of the season.

Class 3A

Both of the valley’s Class 3A programs are listed among the Top 15 teams with Alamosa ranked fifth and Centauri eighth.

Eaton is the top-ranked team, followed by Severance, Mullen, Fort Lupton, Alamosa, Gunnison, Brush, Centauri, Pueblo Central, Valley, Moffat County, Platte Valley, Jefferson, Berthoud, and Strasburg.

Alamosa

Alamosa has nine ranked wrestlers and the Mean Moose are led by Dempsey Gibbs who is second at 120 pounds. The remaining ranked Alamosa competitors are Kyler Liddell who is fourth at 150, Anthony Griego who is fifth at 113, Sage Rockcastle who is fifth at 138, Dario Valdez who is fifth at 126, Jeremiah DeLaCerda who is sixth at 106, James Sanchez who is sixth at 285, Donovan Valdez who is 10th at 144, and Dyson Woodward who is 12th at 132.

Centauri

Centauri has five ranked wrestlers and the Falcons are led by defending state champion Erik Mestas who is at the top at 175 pounds. Josh Polkowske is second at 165, Riley Valdez is fifth at 120, Matthew Salazar is seventh at 106, and Ivan Lopez is 13th at 144.

Class 2A

There are no local teams in the Top 15 in the Class 2A rankings.

Wray is ranked first, followed by Meeker, Fowler, Rocky Ford, Buena Vista, Mancos, Trinidad, Wiggins, Cedaredge, Hayden, North Fork, Byers, Crowley County, Highland and Dolores Huerta.

Center

Center has four ranked wrestlers including Jordan Duran who is fourth at 106, Martin Palma who is fifth at 165, Jesus Valadez who is eighth at 175, and Aaron Valadez who is ninth at 132.

Monte Vista

Monte Vista has only two wrestlers in the rankings including DeAngelo Archuleta who is third at 138, and Damian Lopez who is fourth at 132.

Sargent

Sargent had one ranked grappler in Matthew Voss who is sixth at 120.

Del Norte, Mountain Valley and Sierra Grande/Centennial have no wrestlers in the rankings.

Girls

Alamosa

Alamosa is ranked seventh in the girls state rankings.

Chatfield is ranked first, followed by Discovery Canyon, Pomona, Vista Ridge, Loveland, Fort Lupton, Alamosa, Calhan, Eaglecrest and Doherty.

Defending state champion Sarah DeLaCerda is the only ranked local girl wrestler and she is fourth at 110 pounds.
