Alamosa murals bring life to downtown

ALAMOSA — The stunning mural created in Downtown Alamosa by artist Bianca Maestas is progressing. The artwork is a collage of all things San Luis Valley and features sandhill cranes, orange and red poppies, sweet peas, and tulips (growing through the snow,) according to the artist.

The mural is part of a series of murals sponsored by the Alamosa County Chamber of Commerce.

"My grandmother grows sweet peas, she planted them 40 years ago and they still come up in her yard, " Maestas said.

"The Alamosa Chamber is thrilled to be facilitating the installation of three new community murals this July as part of our greater 100-Year Mural project,” said Erin Keck, chief executive officer of the chamber. “The completed project will include 10 unique murals, to be designed by 10 different local artists, and will each be representative of a decade in our most recent 100 years of history.

“It will also include a walking tour brochure as well as a website with information on the cultural and historical highlights from each mural and time period, activities for kids, details on the murals and artists, and showcasing our gracious sponsors who have made this project possible.

"On Thursday, July 25, we are co-hosting a celebration with Jade Communications as the mural they sponsored goes up. This has truly been a community effort and couldn't have gotten this far so quickly without that support. More info on the project can be found at alamosachamber.com/mural-project, " Keck said.

The mural Maestas is creating is set in the 1930's to 1940s.

The Valley Courier will have an update on the mural next week. The mural is located on the west side of 613-D Fourth Street in Downtown Alamosa.
