Alamosa storm drain art to protect the river

ALAMOSA — On Aug. 19, at the intersection of State Avenue and 11th Street in Alamosa, artists Casey McCoy and Nora Mc Bride were busy painting street art at the storm drains. The art will include text with messages that whatever enters the infrastructure flows into the Rio Grande.

McCoy said his storm drain art includes mountains, trains, fish, and the river. McBride said she loves the skies over the Valley, and her work will consist of a storm with lightning and rain that will eventually enter the drain.

The artwork and text are a City of Alamosa initiative to raise awareness that stormwater that flows into the drain picks up garbage, gasoline, motor oil, pet waste, pesticides, and other untreated toxins into the Rio Grande.

According to McCoy, the city is sponsoring storm drain art at four locations.

The storm drain artwork exemplifies Upstream Art and is an engaging educational program that communicates the function and importance of storm drains and how people can care for them.
