High school football preview – Week 6

All local teams in action this week

ALAMOSA – The sixth week of the 2024 high school football season is this week with most of the San Luis Valley teams beginning league play.

The following are thumbnail sketches of each game.

ALAMOSA (2-2) AT BAYFIELD (3-1)

This week: The Alamosa Mean Moose return to action on Friday as it will travel to face the Bayfield Wolverines. It is the Intermountain League opener for both teams and will kick off at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Last week: The Mean Moose had an open date. The Wolverines lost at Centauri 41-0 last Friday.

Next week: Alamosa returns home to host Gunnison at Homecoming next Friday at 7 p.m. Bayfield will travel to Pagosa Springs next Friday at 7 p.m.

ANTONITO (0-4, 0-2) AT COTOPAXI (0-5, 0-3)

This week: The Antonito Trojans will be on the road as they will go to face the Cotopaxi Pirates. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. at Tezak Field.

Last week: The Trojans lost to Branson/Kim 80-7 at home last Saturday. The Pirates lost to La Veta at home 44-28 last Saturday.

Next week: Antonito will host La Veta next Saturday at 1 p.m. Cotopaxi Will have an open date.

CENTER (0-4) AT MONTE VISTA (2-2)

This week: The Monte Vista Pirates will host the Center Vikings on Friday in the South-Central League opener for both teams. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.

Last week: Both teams had an open date.

Next week: Monte Vista will have an open date following Del Norte’s cancellation of the varsity football season. Center will host Centauri next Friday at 7 p.m.

DOLORES (2-3, 0-1) AT SARGENT (2-2)

This week: The Sargent Farmers will host the Dolores Bears Friday at 6 p.m.

Last week: The Farmers had an open date. The Bears lostits Mountain League opener to Mancos 48-0.

Next week: Sargent will travel to Sanford for a 6 p.m. kickoff. Dolores will have and open date.

IGNACIO (1-3) AT #1 CENTAURI (4-0)

This week: The top-ranked Centauri Falcons will host the Ignacio Bobcats on Friday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Last week: The Falcons defeated Bayfield 41-0 at home last Friday. The Bobcats had an open date.

Next week: Centauri will travel to Center for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Ignacio will travel to Trinidad next Friday with game time scheduled for 7 p.m.

NORWOOD (2-2) AT SANFORD (2-2)

This week: The Sanford Mustangs will open Mountain League play as it hosts the Norwood Mavericks Friday at 4 p.m.

Last week: Both teams had an open date.:

Next week: Sanford will host Sargent next Friday at 6 p.m. Norwood will travel to second-ranked Dove Creek for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

#6 PRIMERO (5-0, 2-0) AT #5 SIERRA GRANDE (4-0, 1-0)

This week: It will be a Top 10 match-up as the fifth-ranked Sierra Grande Panthers will host the sixth-ranked Primero Bulldogs. Kickoff at Roybal Field is at 6:30 p.m.

Last week: The Panthers had an open date. The Bulldogs defeated Kiowa 36-24 on the road last Saturday.

Next week: Sierra Grande will host Branson/Kim next Friday at 6:30 p.m. Primero will have an open date.

SANGRE DE CRISTO (1-2) AT FOWLER (1-3)

This week: The Sangre de Cristo Thunderbirds will open play in the new Six County League on Friday at it will travel to meet the Fowler Grizzlies. Kickoff at Milberger Field is at 7 p.m.

Last week: The Thunderbirds lost at Holly by a score of 68-48 last Friday. The Grizzlies had an open date.

Next week: Sangre de Cristo will host Hoehne next Friday at 7 p.m. Fowler will host Custer County next Friday at 7 p.m.
