SANFORD – The Sanford High School volleyball team had an easy time with visiting Trinidad Saturday at the SHS gym. At least for the first two sets.

The Lady Miners woke up in the third set and almost defeated the Lady Mustangs in that stanza. However, Sanford held on to win by scores of 25-9, 25-9 and 25-22.

“We tried to get refit for Homecoming but it was still good,” said Sanford coach Melissa Faucette. “We have to keep our mental game a little tougher, but it’s still a good win.”

Trinidad scored the first point of the first set, but Sanford answered with three straight points. The Lady Miners tied the score before the Lady Mustangs went on a 12-2 run to increase their lead to 15-5.

Trinidad closed the deficit to 15-7, but Sanford finished with a 10-2 run to take the first set 25-9.

The teams opened the second set by exchanging side outs before Sanford went on an 18-4 rally to claim a 22-7 lead. The Lady Miners closed to within 22-9, but the Lady Mustangs scored the final three points for another 25-9 win.

Trinidad scored the first two points of the third set, but Sanford scored eight straight points. The Lady Miners narrowed their deficit to 11-9 before the Lady Mustangs had a 3-1 run for a 14-10 lead.

Trinidad came back to decrease the Sanford lead to 16-15. Once again, the teams traded side outs before the Lady Mustangs pushed the lead to 20-17.

The Lady Miners again closed to within one point at 20-19, but Sanford had another strong finish by scoring five of the final eight points for a 25-22 victory.

Brooklynn Reynolds led the Lady Mustangs with 27 assists. Shasta Bond led in kills with 12, followed by Bella Peterson with seven, and Claire Crowther with six.

Bond and Makynlee Faucette both had three service aces to lead Sanford. Reynolds was next with two.

Sanford (6-4, 2-1) will have two tough road games this weekend. On Friday, the Lady Mustangs will travel to Escalante (N.M.), and on Saturday, they will be in Buena Vista.

“Escalante is really good on the New Mexico side,” coach Faucette said. “Buena Vista going to be tough in our league, so it will be a good game. Good match-ups.”
