101st Ski-Hi Stampede comes to an exciting conclusion

MONTE VISTA – The 101st Annual Ski-Hi Stampede wrapped up Sunday at the Ski-Hi Complex with four event winners being decided on the final day.

There were champions determined on the final day in both bareback riding and permit bareback riding. In permit bareback riding, Drake Amundson of Wheatland, Wyo., scored 83 points on Rebel Yell to win permit bareback riding on Sunday. An Alamosa cowboy, Dawson Honeycutt, finished second with 62 points on Bill on Saturday.

Rocker Stiener on Weatherford, Texas, won the regular bareback riding on Sunday by scoring 86 points on Revolver. Another Sunday performer, Bill Tutor of Huntsville, Texas, was the runner-up by scoring 82 points on Rose Gold. Third place went to Evan Betony of Tonalea, Ariz., with 80 ½ points on Thin Lizzy on Friday, and fourth place went to Jade Taton of Kersey who scored 79 ½ on Windy Whisky also on Friday.

The regular saddle bronc riding champ was also determined on Sunday as Isaac Richard of Eunice, La., scored 84 ½ points on Intruder. Ira Dickinson of Rock Springs, Wyo., took second with 82 on Cheeseburger on Friday, Shea Fournier of Raceland, La., was third with 82 points on Weed Wacker on Sunday and Gus Gaillard of Morse, Texas, was fourth with 81 ½ points on Crossroads on Sunday.

In permit saddle bronc riding, Coleman Shallbetter of Gunnison had the best score of 83 ½ on Mighty Mouse on Friday which stood through the rest of the rodeo. Took second place with Rosey Rosendahl of Meeker 79 on No Surprise on Sunday, Jack Skavdahl of Casper, Wyo., took third with 73 on Gang Leader on Friday, and Cauy Pennington of Kiowa was fourth with 72 on Dignity on Friday.

After having no successful bull rides on Friday, one rider had a qualified ride on Saturday and two more came on Sunday.

Hunter Boydston of Grover won the event with an 86-point ride on James Bond on Saturday. Braden Richardson of Jasper, Texas, scored 81 ½ on Blue Light Special on Sunday, and Cort McFadden of Novice, Texas, scored 81 on Redman also on Sunday.

The final champion determined on Sunday was Austin Eller of Glendo, Wyo., with a 4.7-second run in steer wrestling. The runner-up, Brady Buum, of Keenseburg also came on Sunday as he had a time of 4.8 seconds. Colt Honey of La Junta was third with 5.0 on Friday, and Trey Nahrgang of Buckeye, Ariz., was fourth in 5.3 on Saturday.

Team Roping was won by Kelsey Phillips of Rough Rock, Ariz., and Trevor Nowlin of Casa Grande, Ariz., who had a run of 5.4 seconds on Friday. Corey Whinnery of Powderhorn and Robert Murphy of Congress, Ariz., had a 5.7-second run on Saturday, Choc Westcott of San Tan Valley, Ariz., and Clinton Groff of Phoenix, Ariz., were third in 5.8 on Friday, and Justin Mascarenas of Santa Fe, N.M., and Pace Blanchard of Albuquerque, N.M., were fourth in 6.0  on Friday.

Riley Pruitt of Gering, Neb., had a 9.5-second time in the Friday slack to win tie-down roping. Chance Wall of La Junta was second in 10.4 also in the slack, Ryan Canty of Sanford was third in 10.7 in the Friday night performance, and Darnell Johnson of Fowler was fourth in 11.9 on Saturday.

In the ladies’ events, Linsay Rosser-Sumpter of Fowler won breakaway roping in 2.7 seconds in the slack. KInlie Brinnise of Craig was second in 2.8 on Saturday. Devyn Dennison of Thoreau, N.M., and Brianna Sharp tied for third with and even three-second run both in the slack.

Barrel racing was won by Madison Bean of Lubbock, Texas, in 17.53 seconds on Saturday. Shali Lord of Lamar was second in 17.59 in the slack, Kaycee Killingsworth of Thrall, Texas, was third in 17.61 on Friday, and Sage Kohr was fourth in 17.64 in the slack.

In local events, Chase Francis and Fernando Gonzales won team roping in 8.4 seconds, and Bailey Danylo of barrel racing in 18.49.
