101st Ski-Hi Stampede gets underway

MONTE VISTA  - The 101st Annual Ski-Hi Stampede kicked off on Friday at the Ski-Hi Complex.

Slack

There was a slack on Friday afternoon to start the rodeo action.

There were three events – ladies barrel racing, tie-down roping, and breakaway roping.

The best time in the slack in barrel racing was recorded by Shali Lord who ran the cloverleaf pattern in 17.59 seconds. Second place was turned in by Sage Kohr in 17.64, followed by Jenna Pruitt in 17.74, and C.J. Vondette in 17.87.

The top tie-down time in the slack was by Riley Pruitt in 9.5 seconds. He was the only roper to break the 10-second mark.

Second place went to Chance Wall in 10.4, third place was recorded by Tristan Mahoney in 12.3, and fourth place was turned in by Colten Wallis in 13.9.

The best breakaway mark was a 2.7-second run by Lindsay Proctor. There was a tie for second place as Devyn Dennison and Brianna Sharp both had times of three seconds even. Fourth place was Deborah Fabrizio in 3.4 seconds.

Friday performance

The best times established in the slack held up through the Friday evening performance.

Shali Lord’s time of 17.59 barely remained in first place. Kaycee Killingsworth just missed  the front-runner’s mark as her time of 17.61 was 0.02 seconds off Lord’s time.

Sage Kohr dropped to third and Jenna Pruitt fell to fourth.

Riley Pruitt’s time of 9.5 seconds also remained in first place, followed by Chance Wall in 10.4. Ryan Canty took over third place in 10.7, while Tristan Mahoney fell to fourth.

Lindsay Proctor also stayed in front in breakaway roping in 2.7 seconds. Devyn Dennison and Breanna Sharp remained tied for second, but Madalyn Richards took over fourth place with a run of 3.2 seconds.

In other timed events, Colt Honey leads steer wrestling in an even five seconds. Jacob Sterkel is second at 6.3, Jace Joos is third in 13.8, and Rooster Yazzie is fourth in 15.4.

In team roping, the duet of Kelsey Phillips and Trevor Nowlin are in first place with a run of 5.4 seconds. Choc Westcott and Clinton Groff are second in 5.8 seconds, Wade Hatch and Shane Hatch are third in 6.3, and Wyatt Kent and Jacob Auza are fourth in 8.6.

In the rough stock events, the riders had the upper hand in the bronc riding.

In bareback riding, both cowboys had successful runs. Evan Betony leads with a score of 80 ½ points on Thin Lizzy, followed closely by Jade Taton with 79 ½ on Windy Whiskey.

In permit saddle bronc riding, four of the five riders were successful. Coleman Shallbetter leads with 83 ½ points on Mighty Mouse, followed by Jack Skavdahl with 73 on Gang Leader, Cauy Pennington with 72 on Dignity, and John Birkholz with 69 on No Surprise.

Several of the riders returned for the regular saddle bronc riding with seven of the 10 entrants recording a score. Ira Dickinson took advantage of a re-ride and leads with 82 points on Cheeseburger.

There is a tie for second place as Coleman Shallbetter scored 80 points on Sally Rand, and Cable Wareham scored 80 points on Prince Ali. Jack Skavdahl is in fourth place with 79 points on Baleine Bride.

The same can’t be said about the bull riders as all four participants were thrown from their rides.

Local rodeo

The local rodeo took place following the slack with two events taking place – team roping and barrel racing.

Kelton Gartrell and Tucker Canty won team roping in 9.1 seconds. Tim Black and Braxton Getz were second in 11.2, Chase Francis and Fernando Gonzalez were third in 12.6, and Taten Koenig and Bailey Danylo placed fourth in 13.3.

Claire Cook won the barrel racing competition with a run of 18.99 seconds. Riley Canty and Rivers Hill were right behind in an even 19 seconds, and Bailey Danylo was fourth in 19.14.

The Stampede continues today at 7 p.m., and it will conclude Sunday at 2 p.m.
