Alamosa girls win Joe I. Vigil Invitational; boys finish second

ALAMOSA – Alamosa High School won the girls race at the 29th Annual Joe I. Vigil Invitational, while the Mean Moose finished second in the boys race Saturday at Cattails Golf Course.

“I’m quite pleased with the performance of the boys and girls today,” said Alamosa coach Jen McQuitty. “They packed it up like we asked them to do. They ran the second half very aggressively, which is what we wanted as well.”

Girls race

Alamosa won the meet with 32 points, which was 12 points better than second-place Los Alamosa (N.M.). Leading the Lady Mean Moose was Sarah DeLaCerda who finished in third place in 19:12.10. Also scoring for the Alamosa girls were Elizabeth McQuitty who was fifth in 20:02.45, Madeline Castillo who was sixth in 20:07.32, Lia Castillo who was seventh in 20:12.20, and Autmun McQuitty who was 11th in 20:52.00.

Also running for the Lady Mean Moose were Abby Wubben who was 34th in 22:27.80, Victoria Gifford who was 35th in 22:28.28, Vanessa Villava who was 36th in 22:31.45, Raecicia Gonzales who was 71st in 23:55.91, Aani Hardesty who was 91st in 24:52.70, Zaidah Najera who was 154th in 29:37.52, and Kaylee Gonzales-Moore who was 163rd in 30:50.06.

Centauri finished 11th in the girls race with 334 points. The Lady Falcons were led by Tayte Hostetter who finished 23rd in 21:45.15. Other Centauri girls runners included Kaia Skadberg who was 48th in 23:06.91, Hannah Guymon who was 88th in 24:42.94, McKenzie Torres who was 106th in 25:50.37, and Tayden Montoya who was 144th in 28:11.92.

Antonito, Center and Sargent also entered runners in the girls race, but neither team recorded a score.

For the Lady Trojans, Zanita Garcia finished 152nd in 29:28.91. For the Lady Vikings, Promise Casados was 180th in 35:54.55, and Blaney Higuera was 181st in 36:16.61. The Lady Farmers’ only representative was KayleeAnn Martinez who finished 82nd in 24:30.14.

Boys race

Alamosa scored 68 points in the boys race, which was 24 points behind team champion Los Alamosa. Isaac Higareda led the Mean Moose as he was the individual medalist in 16:35.14. Also scoring for the Alamosa boys were Mario Villaba who was fifth in 16:58.59, Santiago Trujillo who was 17th in 17:51.00, Jayr Almeida who was 22nd in 18:07.66, and Jeremiah DeLaCerda who was 27th in 18:23.50.

Other Mean Moose runners included Dylan Crowther who was 28th in 18:31.32, Thaddeus Cody who was 36th in 18:52.61, William Wilson who was 44th in 19:15.15, Mason Gonzales who was 46th in 19:17.31, Cody, Williams who was 53rd in 19:28.85, Giovanni Fricke who was 55th in 19:29.66, Brock Benton who was 56th in 19:29.75, Alan Flores who was 67th in 19:47.67, Emilio Martinez who was 83rd in 20:16.05, Christopher Brooks who was 151st in 23:38.00, and Kingston Wilcox who was 156th in 23:55.75.

Centauri finished in eighth place with 244 points. Scoring for the Falcons were Mason Sowards who was 23rd in 18:11.41, Carson Bagwell who was 41st in 19:11.81, Tyrel Hostetter who was 52nd in 19:28.41, and Troy Sowards who was 96th in 20:51.99.

Also running for the Centauri boys were Estevan Vega who was 105th in 21:06.35, Liam Sowards who was 170th in 25:05.55, and Mason Finehout who was 176th in 25:54.34.

Antonito placed 18th with 491 points. The Trojans’ scorers included Dean Garcia who was 103rd in 21:06.11, Darius Gomez who was 108th in 21:16.82, Antonio DeHerrera who was 180th in 26:20.64, Jerome Garcia who was 186th in 27:12.52, and Austyn Lopez who was 196th in 32:56.67.

Del Norte, Monte Vista and Sargent entered runners but did not record a team score.

For the Tigers, Riley Orr was 33rd in 18:44.77, Corbin Horrocks was 137th in 22:41.83, and Jose Pinon was 174th in 25:50.13.

The Pirates were represented by Memphis Garcia who was 54th in 19:29.15, and Nehemiah Espinoza who was 195th in 31:11.65.

Representing the Farmers were Westen Burkhart who was 34th in 18:46.60, and Josiah Yocum who was 39th in 19:03.30.

What’s next

Alamosa will head to Irvine, Calif., on Saturday for the Woodbridge Invitational.

“We’re going to take our top seven boys and girls to Woodbridge,” Coach McQuitty said. “It’s one of the top nationally-ranked cross country meets in the nation. We were invited by George Vargas last year after our performance at the state meet and the Desert Twilight.”

Antonito will host the Gerald Archuleta Invitational on Thursday. Center and Sargent will also run at this meet.

Centauri and Monte Vista will run at the Bayfield Invitational on Saturday. Del Norte will be at the Gunnison Invitational on Thursday.
