Basketball regional tournaments begin Friday

ALAMOSA – Several San Luis Valley high school basketball teams will be in regional tournament action on Friday and Saturday.

In Class 3A, both of Alamosa and Centauri high school basketball teams will take part in state tournament play.

On the boys side, Centauri is the fifth overall seed and it will host 28th-ranked The Pinnacle at 6 p.m. on Friday. Alamosa is the 21st seed and it will also be at Centauri and it will take on 12-seeded Salida at 7:30 p.m.

The winners of these games will play Saturday at 1 p.m.

For the girls, Centauri is the 14th seed and it will play in Colorado Springs this weekend. The Lady Falcons will play 19th-seeded Prospect Ridge Academy at 7 p.m. The winner of this game will play the winner between third-seeded The Vanguard School and 30th-seeded Strasburg at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Alamosa is the 23rd seed and it will face 10th-seeded Delta Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Westminster. Should the Lady Mean Moose come out victorious, they will face the winner of the game between The Academy and Jefferson Academy at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.

In Class 2A, both of Sanford’s teams will host a regional this weekend.

The Indian boys team will host the Region 3 tournament and they enter as the third overall seed. Sanford will play 30th-seeded Telluride at 3:30 p.m., while 14th-seeded Holyoke and 19th-seeded Byers will play at 6:30 p.m. The winners will play at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

In the girls regional, the Lady Indians are the top-seeded team and they will host the Region 1 Tournament. They will play 32nd-seeded Burlington at 2 p.m. on Friday. In the other game, 16th-seeded Akron will play 17th-seeded Mancos at 5 p.m. The winners of these two games will play at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Both of Del Norte’s teams have also qualified for regional tournaments but both will be on the road.

On the boys side, the Tigers are the 25th seed and they will travel to Colorado Springs to take on eighth-seeded Thomas MacLaren School in the Region 8 Tournament at 7 p.m. If Del Norte wins, it will play either ninth-seeded Denver Christian or 24th-seeded Wiggins on Saturday at 3 p.m.

The Lady Tigers are the 29th seed and they will head to Oak Creek to play fourth-seeded Soroco in the Region 4 Tournament at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Should Del Norte win, it will play either 13th-seeded Wiggins or 20th-seeded Gilpin County at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The Center and Sargent girls teams will play in the Region 7 Tournament in Greeley. The Lady Vikings are the 26th seed and they will play seventh-seeded Dayspring Christian Academy at 5 p.m. The Lady Farmers are the 10th seed and it will play 23rd-seeded Fountain Valley. The winners will play on Saturday at 11 a.m.

The Monte Vista girls will play in the Region 8 Tournament in Peyton. The Lady Pirates are the 24th seed and they will face ninth-seeded Sedgwick County at 6:30 p.m. A Monte Vista win will have them play either eighth-seeded Peyton or 25th-seeded Ignacio on Saturday at noon.

In Class 1A, the Sierra Grande boys team is the second seed in the Region 3 Tournament at La Junta High School’s Tiger Gym. The Panthers will receive a first-round bye and it will play the winner of the game between eighth-seeded Moffat and fifth-seeded Kim/Branson. The Cowboys will play at 2 p.m. on Friday.

In the girls Region 3 Tournament, also in La Junta, Sangre de Cristo is the second seed and it will receive a first round bye. It will play either fifth-seeded Kit Carson or eighth-seeded Springfield at 12:40 p.m. on Saturday.

Centennial is the seventh seed and it will play sixth-seeded South Baca at 3:20 p.m. on Friday. If the Lady Rams win, they will play top-seeded McClave at 3:20 p.m. on Saturday.

Sierra Grande is the ninth seed and it will play fourth-seeded Kim/Branson at 10 a.m. on Friday. Should the Lady Panthers win, they will play third-seeded Cheyenne Wells at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

The winner of each region will advance to their respective state tournaments which will be played on March 10-12.

The Class 3A State Tournament is at the University of Denver. The Class 2A tournament is at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland, and the Class 1A tournament will be at the University of Northern Colorado.
