La Jara resident Ernestine Mae Winchester, 67, departed this life peacefully on May 25. She was born on March 22, 1955 in La Jara, Colorado, the daughter of J. Luis Valdez and Sylvia (Martinez)Valdez. She was united in marriage to Larry D. Winchester on July 3, 1981 in La Jara, Colorado, they shared a happy and loving union of almost 41 years. Ernestine was well known for her compassionate and caring nature. She worked as a medical technologist for more than 40 years, caring for the health of the San Luis Valley. Ernestine loved to help any and everyone in need. When she had free time, she enjoyed going shopping and spending time with family, especially her new grandson Kota.
She is survived by her loving husband Larry Winchester of La Jara, CO; sons Justin Winchester of Highlands Ranch, CO; Jason Winchester of La Jara, CO; Jarrett Winchester (Camela Gonzales) of Alamosa, CO; one grandson Kota Lucas Winchester, sister Vivian Mondragon of La Jara, CO; Frances Valdez of Del Norte, CO. She is also survived by many other extended family members and friends.
Ernestine was preceded in death by her parents Luis and Sylvia Valdez and one brother Michael Valdez.
A Vigil Service with Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Friday, June 3, 2022 at 7:30 p.m. at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church. Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 10:00 a.m also at Our Lady of the Valley Church. Interment will follow at the La Jara Cemetery.
