James ‘Jim’ Louis Higel

Posted

James "Jim" Louis Higel, 84, passed away peacefully in his home in Alamosa, Colo., on Sept. 6, 2024. Jim was born to Louis and Belle (Timmons) Higel on March 3, 1940, in Alamosa, Colo.

Jim grew up nurturing a deep connection with the land and community of Alamosa. His life's work intertwined with the land he cherished, tending to cows, cultivating hay, and managing the daily rigors of running a family ranch. His dedication extended to his service on the Rio Grande Savings and Loan board, and the Rio Grande Water Users where his wisdom and insight were greatly valued for many years. Jim has also been instrumental in helping conserve and protect the water and land that he loved so much.

Jim was the devoted husband of Janet Higel, and together they shared a passion for life's simple pleasures, including cheering on the Denver Broncos and basking in the company of their beloved family.

He was a caring father to Greg (Shondell) Higel of Alamosa and Jill (Doug) Jeffers of Colorado Springs. His adoration only multiplied with his grandchildren, Corey (Andrea) Higel, Taylor (Dylan) Ledford, Alec (Marcie) Higel, Rian Jeffers (Kevin), and Cade (Carrie) Jeffers, and his great-grandchildren, Solomon, Analicia, Damon, Julian, Yanessa, Eden, Memry and Judah as well as Jim's brother-in-law, Jim (Becky) Dorian, along with numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A man of the people, Jim relished opportunities to surround himself with friends, whether it was at a vibrant community auction or simply conversing over a cup of coffee. His laughter was infectious, and his capacity for friendship knew no bounds.

We bid farewell to a remarkable man whose memory will forever resonate in the lives he touched and the community he so wholeheartedly served. Jim Higel's legacy will continue to thrive in each sunrise over the sprawling fields he cared for and within the hearts of all who loved him.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at the Alamosa Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the charity of your choice.
