First go-round at NHSFR comes to an end

ALAMOSA – The first go-round at the 2023 National High School Finals Rodeo came to a conclusion on Wednesday morning at Gillette, Wyo.

Leading the San Luis Valley youth cowboys and cowgirls is Tylee DeHerrera of La Jara and her partner Kaysen Shahan of Pagosa Springs as they finished the go-round in 22nd place in team roping. They had a time of 9.38 seconds in the Monday morning performance. They are two places outside of qualifying for the final round on Saturday evening.

Another team roping tandem, Klayt Staudt of Saguache and his partner, Rett Coors of Loveland, are in 54th place with a time of 19.63 which was recorded on Tuesday morning.

Staudt is also competing in boys cutting. He is tied for 82nd place with a 62-point performance on Monday morning.

Gracie Wilson of Center is competing in barrel racing and she is in 115th place with a time of 18.813 seconds on Monday evening.

Also competing are Cayden Schulz of Alamosa in steer wrestling, and Ben Sittler of Monte Vista in bull riding. However, neither recorded a mark in their first attempt.

The second go-round began on Wednesday evening. Staudt and Coors will have had their second attempt on Thursday evening, and Staudt will have his second cutting run on Friday evening. Wilson and Sittler will go for the second time on Friday morning and Schulz and DeHerrera and Shahan will go for the second time on Friday evening.
