Former school superintendent arrested

Records indicate his last position was with Sargent Schools

SANFORD– Former school superintendent William Brian Crowther, 61, of Sanford was arrested Monday on charges he allegedly commited sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust (class 3 felony) and child abuse.

The Conejos County Sheriff’s office received a report of a possible sexual assault on Feb. 8, 2023 involving Crowther. County investigators were immediately assisgned to the case according to a press release from the sheriff’s office Monday.

After an extensive investigation, the case was filed with the 12th  Judicial District Attorney’s Office. An arrest warrant was issued for Crowther’s arrest.

Valley Courier records indicate he may have last been superintendent in the Sargent School District. News reports indicate that he resigned at Sargent earlier this year citing personal reasons and Shelley David was appointed interim superintendent. He reportedly also served as superintendent of the Centennial School District in San Luis.

This is still an active investigation and no further information will be released at this time. A person chaged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty.
